REM sleep behavior disorder

Sleep disorder where patients act out dreams due to loss of normal muscle paralysis during REM sleep.

Full Definition

REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD) is a parasomnia characterized by the loss of normal muscle atonia during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, allowing patients to physically act out their dreams. In geriatric populations, RBD is particularly significant as it often serves as an early indicator of neurodegenerative disorders, especially synucleinopathies like Parkinson's disease and dementia with Lewy bodies. The disorder can result in injury to patients or bed partners and requires careful evaluation and management, including environmental safety measures and possible pharmacological intervention.

Usage

Usage note: Consider as potential early sign of neurodegenerative disease.
