cervical stenosis

Narrowing or closure of the cervical canal, which can occur following radiation therapy or surgical procedures, potentially causing complications.

Full Definition

Cervical stenosis is the abnormal narrowing or complete closure of the cervical canal, which can develop as a late effect of radiation therapy for cervical cancer or following certain surgical procedures. This condition can lead to several complications including hematometra (blood accumulation in the uterus), pyometra (pus accumulation), and difficulty with future gynecologic examinations and procedures. In cancer survivors, cervical stenosis can complicate surveillance efforts by making cervical cytology collection challenging or impossible. Management may involve cervical dilation procedures or, in severe cases, surgical intervention. Recognition of this potential complication is important for proper long-term follow-up planning in gynecologic cancer survivors.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from vaginal stenosis, which affects the vaginal canal rather than the cervical canal.
