Full Definition

Lymphovascular space invasion (LVSI) refers to the presence of tumor cells within the lumina of lymphatic vessels or blood vessels surrounding the primary tumor. This pathologic finding is an important prognostic factor in gynecologic malignancies, particularly endometrial and cervical cancers, as it indicates an increased risk of metastatic spread to lymph nodes and distant sites. LVSI is typically identified on histopathologic examination of surgical specimens and influences staging, treatment decisions, and prognosis. The presence of LVSI may warrant more aggressive treatment approaches, including lymph node assessment or adjuvant therapy. In endometrial cancer, LVSI is incorporated into risk stratification models to guide postoperative management decisions.
