performance status
Standardized assessment of a cancer patient's functional capacity and ability to tolerate treatment.
Full Definition
Performance status is a quantitative measure of a patient's general well-being and functional capacity, commonly assessed using the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) scale or Karnofsky Performance Scale. These scales evaluate the patient's ability to perform daily activities, work, and care for themselves, ranging from fully active (ECOG 0) to completely disabled (ECOG 4). Performance status is a critical factor in treatment decision-making, as it helps predict treatment tolerance, response rates, and overall prognosis. Poor performance status may necessitate dose modifications, alternative treatments, or supportive care approaches.
Usage
Usage note: Hyphenate as performance status when used as an adjective; ECOG scale ranges 0-4, Karnofsky scale 0-100.
