Salpingo-oophorectomy is the surgical procedure involving removal of both the fallopian tubes (salpingectomy) and ovaries (oophorectomy). This procedure may be performed unilaterally (one side) or bilaterally (both sides) and can be prophylactic (preventive) or therapeutic (treatment). In gynecologic oncology, bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy is commonly performed as risk-reducing surgery in BRCA mutation carriers or as part of staging and treatment for ovarian or endometrial cancers. The procedure results in immediate surgical menopause when performed bilaterally in premenopausal women.
