Full Definition
Dilation and curettage is a surgical procedure involving mechanical dilation of the cervix followed by scraping or suction of the endometrial lining from the uterus. Performed for diagnostic purposes (abnormal bleeding evaluation, endometrial sampling) or therapeutic indications (incomplete abortion, retained products of conception, abnormal bleeding treatment). May be combined with hysteroscopy for enhanced visualization. Generally performed as outpatient procedure under sedation or general anesthesia. Important to distinguish from D&E (dilation and evacuation) used for second-trimester pregnancy termination.
