fascial dehiscence

Separation or breakdown of the fascial layer closure following abdominal surgery, potentially leading to hernia formation.

Full Definition

Fascial dehiscence refers to the partial or complete separation of the fascial layer that has been surgically closed during abdominal procedures. This complication can occur in the early postoperative period and may be associated with factors such as infection, poor tissue quality, surgical technique, or patient comorbidities. Fascial dehiscence can range from superficial separation to complete breakdown involving all layers of the abdominal wall. If left untreated, it can progress to incisional hernia formation. Management may require surgical repair depending on the extent of separation.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from superficial wound dehiscence, which involves only skin and subcutaneous tissues.
