Type of pelvic organ prolapse involving herniation of the rectum into the posterior (back) vaginal wall due to weakening of the rectovaginal fascia. Results from childbirth trauma, chronic straining, aging, or connective tissue disorders. Symptoms include vaginal pressure, incomplete rectal emptying, need for digital assistance with bowel movements (splinting), and visible vaginal bulge. Graded by severity and may occur in combination with other types of prolapse. Treatment options include pelvic floor exercises, pessary use, or surgical repair through posterior colporrhaphy.
