total laparoscopic hysterectomy

Also written as: TLH — Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy

Complete removal of uterus and cervix performed entirely through laparoscopic approach without vaginal assistance.

Full Definition

Total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) is a minimally invasive surgical procedure in which the entire uterus and cervix are removed using laparoscopic techniques without any vaginal component to the dissection. The procedure involves multiple small abdominal incisions through which specialized instruments and a camera are inserted. Key steps include coagulation and division of the uterine vessels, bladder dissection, colpotomy, and specimen removal through the vagina or via morcellation. TLH offers advantages of reduced postoperative pain, shorter recovery time, and improved cosmetic results compared to open surgery.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish clearly from LAVH which includes vaginal component.
