cardinal ligaments

The primary support structures of the uterus and cervix, extending laterally from the cervix to the pelvic sidewalls.

Full Definition

The cardinal ligaments, also known as Mackenrodt's ligaments or transverse cervical ligaments, are the main supportive structures of the uterus and upper vagina. These fibromuscular bands extend laterally from the cervix and upper vagina to the pelvic sidewalls, forming part of the parametrium. They contain the uterine blood vessels, lymphatics, and autonomic nerve fibers that supply the pelvic organs. The cardinal ligaments provide crucial lateral support to prevent uterine prolapse and are important surgical landmarks during hysterectomy and other pelvic procedures. Weakness or damage to these structures can contribute to pelvic organ prolapse.
