cervical stenosis

Pronunciation: SER-vi-kal sten-OH-sis

Narrowing or closure of the cervical canal, impeding normal menstrual flow or access to the uterine cavity.

Full Definition

Cervical stenosis refers to the abnormal narrowing of the cervical canal, which can occur at the internal os, external os, or throughout the canal. This condition can be congenital or acquired following procedures such as LEEP, cone biopsy, or infection. Cervical stenosis may cause menstrual flow obstruction leading to hematometra, difficulty with IUD insertion, or challenges in obtaining endometrial samples. The condition can be asymptomatic or present with dysmenorrhea, amenorrhea, or fertility issues.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from cervical incompetence, which refers to cervical weakness rather than narrowing.

In Context

  • "Cervical stenosis following previous LEEP procedure prevented adequate endometrial sampling." — Procedure complication note
