Gamekeeper's thumb, also known as skier's thumb when acute, is an injury involving the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the thumb metacarpophalangeal joint. This condition was originally described in Scottish gamekeepers who developed chronic UCL insufficiency from repetitive stress while breaking rabbits' necks. The acute version commonly occurs in skiing accidents when the thumb is forcibly abducted against a ski pole. The injury results in thumb instability, weakness of lateral pinch, and pain. Surgical repair is often indicated for complete ruptures or when conservative treatment fails.
