The hypothenar eminence is the fleshy muscular prominence located on the ulnar (pinky) side of the palm, opposite to the thenar eminence. It consists of four muscles: the abductor digiti minimi, flexor digiti minimi brevis, opponens digiti minimi, and palmaris brevis. These muscles are primarily innervated by the deep branch of the ulnar nerve and are responsible for movements of the fifth digit including abduction, flexion, and opposition. In hand surgery, the hypothenar eminence is relevant in ulnar nerve injuries, traumatic wounds, and surgical approaches to the ulnar aspect of the hand.
