The Moberg flap is a specialized volar advancement flap technique used for fingertip reconstruction, particularly valuable for providing sensate coverage of fingertip defects. Originally described by Erik Moberg in 1964, this flap is based on the digital neurovascular bundles and can advance proximally by flexing the interphalangeal joints. The flap is most commonly used for thumb reconstruction but can be applied to fingers as well. The technique preserves sensation because the flap includes the digital nerves, making it ideal for areas requiring discriminatory sensation. The flap can advance approximately 1-2 cm, and donor site coverage may require skin grafting. Success depends on adequate vascular supply and careful surgical technique to avoid neurovascular bundle injury.
