Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare but aggressive malignant tumor that primarily affects the salivary glands, particularly the minor salivary glands of the oral cavity. It is characterized by its tendency for perineural invasion, which can cause pain and facial nerve paralysis. Despite often appearing slow-growing, it has a high propensity for distant metastases, particularly to the lungs. The tumor has a distinctive 'Swiss cheese' appearance on histology due to its cribriform growth pattern.
