This condition typically occurs in patients with recurrent cancer, previous radiation therapy, or wound breakdown that exposes the carotid vessels. The syndrome can present as acute hemorrhage (acute blowout), repeated sentinel bleeding episodes (impending blowout), or as a covered rupture. Management requires immediate vascular intervention and carries significant morbidity and mortality.
