Chemoradiation, also known as concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT), is a treatment approach that combines chemotherapy and radiation therapy administered simultaneously to achieve enhanced tumor control through synergistic effects. In head and neck oncology, chemoradiation has become the standard of care for locally advanced disease and organ preservation protocols. The chemotherapy acts as a radiosensitizer, making tumor cells more susceptible to radiation damage while also treating potential micrometastatic disease. Common regimens include cisplatin-based protocols or carboplatin for patients unable to tolerate cisplatin. The combined treatment typically results in increased acute toxicity compared to either modality alone.
