ECOG performance status
Pronunciation: EE-cog
Also written as: ECOG — Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group
Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group scale (0-5) measuring patient functional status and ability to tolerate treatment. Critical for treatment planning in head and neck cancer.
Full Definition
The ECOG Performance Status is a standardized assessment tool developed by the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group to evaluate a cancer patient's level of functioning and their ability to care for themselves and carry out daily activities. The scale ranges from 0 (fully active, able to carry on all pre-disease performance without restriction) to 5 (dead). In head and neck oncology, ECOG scores are crucial for determining treatment eligibility, particularly for intensive multimodal therapies. Patients with ECOG scores of 2 or higher may require modified treatment approaches due to reduced functional capacity.
Usage
Usage note: Always use with numeric scale; distinguish from Karnofsky scale which uses percentages.
