Full Definition

The prevertebral fascia is a component of the deep cervical fascia that forms a tubular sheath around the vertebral column and associated prevertebral muscles, extending from the skull base to the mediastinum. This fascial layer serves as a crucial anatomic landmark in head and neck oncology as it represents the deepest boundary of neck dissection and a potential barrier to tumor spread. Radiologic evidence of prevertebral fascia involvement by tumor typically indicates unresectable disease and contraindication to surgical intervention. The fascia also contains important structures including the cervical sympathetic chain, brachial plexus roots, and vertebral vessels.
