supracricoid laryngectomy

Partial laryngectomy preserving the cricoid cartilage and at least one arytenoid cartilage. A conservative surgical option for selected laryngeal cancers.

Full Definition

A type of partial laryngectomy that involves removal of the thyroid cartilage, vocal cords, and false vocal cords while preserving the cricoid cartilage and at least one arytenoid cartilage. This procedure is indicated for selected T2-T3 laryngeal carcinomas and allows for preservation of laryngeal function while achieving oncologic control. There are two main variants: cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP) and cricohyoidopexy (CHP), depending on whether the epiglottis is preserved. The procedure aims to maintain swallowing and phonatory function while providing adequate cancer resection. Careful patient selection is crucial, as postoperative functional outcomes depend on the patient's ability to protect the airway during swallowing.

Usage

Usage note: Always specify the variant (CHEP or CHP) when documenting the procedure.
