Androstenedione is a steroid hormone precursor to testosterone and estrone, produced by the adrenal glands and gonads. Elevated levels indicate androgen excess and are commonly seen in PCOS, adrenal tumors, and congenital adrenal hyperplasia. It is less potent than testosterone but contributes to hirsutism and virilization. Androstenedione measurement helps differentiate between ovarian and adrenal sources of hyperandrogenism in women.
