Bioavailable testosterone includes both free testosterone and testosterone loosely bound to albumin, representing the portion available for biological activity. Unlike total testosterone, which includes tightly bound hormone, bioavailable testosterone better reflects androgenic activity in tissues. This measurement is particularly useful in older men and women where SHBG levels may be altered, affecting the interpretation of total testosterone results.
