Bone Graft Resorption

The partial or complete breakdown and loss of grafted bone volume over time before or after implant placement.

Full Definition

Bone graft resorption is the physiological or pathological process by which grafted bone material is degraded and replaced—ideally by new host bone—or lost entirely through osteoclastic activity. Resorption rates vary considerably by graft material type: autografts generally resorb faster than xenografts, while alloplastic materials may exhibit minimal resorption but also limited substitution by native bone. Volumetric resorption of the graft prior to or following implant placement may compromise final implant position, prosthetic space, and long-term aesthetics. Editors should avoid conflating 'resorption' with 'remodelling': remodelling implies substitution of graft by host bone, whereas resorption implies net volume loss.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish carefully from 'crestal bone loss' (resorption around the implant collar) and 'bone remodelling' (physiological substitution). Use consistent terminology within any single manuscript.
