Definitive Prosthesis

The final, permanent implant-supported restoration delivered to the patient after successful osseointegration and completion of any provisional phase, intended for long-term clinical use.

Full Definition

A definitive prosthesis is the permanent implant-supported restoration that replaces the provisional restoration following confirmation of osseointegration, soft-tissue maturation, and patient approval of aesthetics and function. It may take the form of a single crown, a fixed partial or complete denture, or a bar-supported overdenture, fabricated from materials such as porcelain-fused-to-metal, zirconia, or acrylic resin on a metal framework. The transition from provisional to definitive prosthesis is a critical clinical milestone documented in prosthetic records and insurance submissions. Editors should note that 'definitive' is the correct term in clinical documentation; 'final prosthesis' or 'permanent prosthesis' are acceptable in patient-facing language but may be flagged in formal records.

Usage

Usage note: Prefer 'definitive prosthesis' in all formal clinical and regulatory documents over the lay equivalents 'final' or 'permanent' prosthesis. Do not confuse with 'transitional prosthesis' (worn during the healing phase) or 'provisional prosthesis' (a temporary restoration used for assessment).

  • "The definitive prosthesis was delivered at the six-month review appointment after successful osseointegration was confirmed by resonance frequency analysis." — Prosthetic treatment record
  • "The insurance claim form required the clinician to specify whether the submitted restoration was a provisional or definitive prosthesis." — Insurance claim document
