Dynamic Navigation

Also written as: d-CAIS — Dynamic Computer-Aided Implant Surgery

A real-time computer-guided implant surgery system that tracks instrument and patient positions intraoperatively, displaying live positional data to the surgeon without a physical surgical guide.

Full Definition

Dynamic navigation systems—also called dynamic surgical navigation or dynamic computer-aided implant surgery (d-CAIS)—use optical or electromagnetic tracking to monitor the position of the surgical drill relative to the patient's jaw in real time. Unlike static guided surgery, no physical drill guide is manufactured; instead, the surgeon views a screen displaying the planned versus actual drill trajectory and can make intraoperative adjustments. The approach offers flexibility for cases where anatomy changes intraoperatively or where surgical guide fabrication is not feasible. Editors should distinguish dynamic navigation from static guided surgery, as the two terms describe fundamentally different workflows.

Usage

Usage note: Clarify on first use that this is a real-time, screen-based system as opposed to a physical surgical guide; the distinction is fundamental to methods reproducibility.

In Context

  • "The authors compared dynamic navigation with static guided surgery and reported comparable angular accuracy at a statistically significant level." — Randomised controlled trial
  • "Verify that 'dynamic navigation' is not abbreviated to 'navigation' in the abstract, where it could be mistaken for a non-dental context." — Editorial style note
