Fixture-Level Impression

An impression technique in implant prosthodontics in which the impression coping is connected directly to the implant body rather than to the abutment, capturing the precise position and orientation of the implant in the arch.

Full Definition

A fixture-level impression (also called an implant-level impression) records the three-dimensional position of the implant fixture itself within the dental arch by using a specialised impression coping attached to the implant. This contrasts with an abutment-level impression, in which the impression coping attaches to a pre-placed abutment. Fixture-level impressions afford the laboratory technician greater flexibility in custom abutment fabrication. They are used in both conventional and digital workflows (as scan-body-based equivalents in the latter). Editors should ensure that documents distinguish clearly between fixture-level and abutment-level impression techniques, as the distinction has direct implications for laboratory instructions and clinical accuracy.

Usage note: Always hyphenate 'fixture-level' when used as a compound modifier. The synonym 'implant-level impression' is preferred in some North American publications; editors should standardise per house style.
