scan body

A geometric component attached to a dental implant during intraoral or desktop scanning to allow digital identification of the implant's position and orientation.

Full Definition

A scan body is a prefabricated, implant-specific component with a known and precise geometry that is placed on the implant during a digital impression procedure. CAD/CAM software uses the scan body's geometry to calculate the three-dimensional position, depth, and angulation of the implant within the digital scan. This information is then used to design prosthetic components in virtual workflows. Editors should note that 'scan body' is the preferred clinical term; 'scanbody' (one word) appears in some manufacturer literature but is not universally standardised. It is distinct from an impression coping, which is used with traditional impression materials.

Usage

Usage note: Preferred form is two words: 'scan body'. Flag 'scanbody' as a manufacturer variant; standardise per house style. Do not use interchangeably with 'impression coping'.
