Full Definition

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is an advanced catheter-based imaging modality that uses near-infrared light to generate extremely high-resolution cross-sectional images of coronary arteries. OCT provides superior resolution compared to intravascular ultrasound, enabling detailed visualization of plaque characteristics, stent strut coverage, and vessel wall microstructure. The technique requires temporary blood displacement during image acquisition, typically achieved through contrast injection or saline flush. OCT is particularly valuable for assessing stent optimization, detecting edge dissections, and characterizing vulnerable plaque features in research and clinical applications.
