Full Definition

Overlapping stents involves the deliberate placement of two or more stents with overlapping segments to treat lesions longer than a single stent or to ensure complete lesion coverage with adequate landing zones. While effective for treating long lesions, overlapping stents creates areas of double drug elution and metal density that may increase the risk of restenosis and late stent thrombosis. The overlap zone typically requires high-pressure post-dilatation to ensure proper apposition and minimize flow disturbances. Current guidelines recommend minimizing overlap length (typically 2-4mm) and using intravascular imaging to optimize deployment. Single long stents are preferred when technically feasible to avoid overlap-related complications.
