stent thrombosis

Pronunciation: throm-BO-sis

Acute blood clot formation within a previously implanted coronary stent, representing a catastrophic complication requiring emergency intervention.

Full Definition

Stent thrombosis is the formation of an acute occlusive thrombus within a previously implanted coronary stent, typically presenting as ST-elevation myocardial infarction or sudden cardiac death. The complication is classified temporally as acute (≤24 hours), subacute (1-30 days), late (30 days-1 year), or very late (>1 year) after stent implantation. Risk factors include premature antiplatelet therapy discontinuation, stent malapposition, under-expansion, or patient-specific thrombotic predisposition. The Academic Research Consortium has established definitive diagnostic criteria based on angiographic, pathological, and clinical evidence. Management requires immediate revascularization with aspiration thrombectomy and restoration of dual antiplatelet therapy.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from in-stent restenosis, which is a gradual process rather than acute thrombotic occlusion.
