CO2 is preferred because it absorbs rapidly into tissues and is eliminated through respiration, reducing the risk of gas embolism compared to other gases. The pressure is typically maintained between 12-15 mmHg during surgery. This technique allows surgeons to safely manipulate instruments while maintaining clear visualization of anatomical structures. The term combines 'capno' (carbon dioxide) with 'peritoneum' (abdominal lining).
