The capsular bag is the transparent, elastic membrane that originally surrounded the natural crystalline lens and remains after cataract surgery. During phacoemulsification, the anterior capsule is opened through capsulorhexis while the posterior capsule and zonules are preserved to create a stable foundation for intraocular lens implantation. Maintaining capsular bag integrity is crucial for proper IOL positioning and long-term visual outcomes.
