Pneumovagina

Full Definition

The presence of carbon dioxide gas within the vaginal cavity that can occur during laparoscopic gynecologic procedures. This phenomenon typically results from gas tracking through the fallopian tubes or through small uterine perforations created by uterine manipulators. While generally benign, pneumovagina can cause patient discomfort postoperatively and may rarely lead to gas embolism if gas enters the systemic circulation through disrupted vessels.
