SILS

Also written as: SILS — Single-Incision Laparoscopic Surgery

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery performed through a single small incision, typically at the umbilicus.

Full Definition

Single-incision laparoscopic surgery (SILS) is an advanced minimally invasive technique where all laparoscopic instruments and the camera are inserted through a single small incision, usually placed at the umbilicus. This approach aims to reduce surgical trauma, minimize scarring, and potentially decrease postoperative pain compared to conventional multi-port laparoscopy. SILS requires specialized instruments and advanced surgical skills due to the loss of triangulation and increased instrument crowding. The technique is used for procedures such as cholecystectomy, appendectomy, and selected gynecologic operations.

Usage

Usage note: SILS is the preferred abbreviation; avoid confusion with LESS (laparoendoscopic single-site surgery).

In Context

  • "The patient underwent SILS cholecystectomy with excellent cosmetic results." — Operative report
  • "SILS technique was abandoned in favor of conventional laparoscopy due to technical difficulties." — Intraoperative decision note
