Vaginal cuff

The sutured closure of the upper vagina following hysterectomy, which may be performed laparoscopically or vaginally.

Full Definition

The surgically created junction at the apex of the vagina following removal of the cervix during hysterectomy. The vaginal cuff represents the site where the vaginal tissues are closed, typically with running or interrupted sutures. In laparoscopic hysterectomy, the cuff may be closed intracorporeally using laparoscopic suturing techniques or extracorporeally through vaginal approach. Proper cuff closure is essential to prevent complications such as bleeding, infection, dehiscence, or vault prolapse. The integrity of the vaginal cuff is critical for maintaining vaginal length and sexual function.

Usage

Usage note: Important to specify closure technique and suture material in operative documentation.
