Full Definition

Absent end-diastolic flow (AEDF) is a Doppler ultrasound finding in the umbilical artery characterized by the complete absence of forward blood flow during the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle. This finding indicates severe placental vascular compromise and increased placental resistance. AEDF is associated with significant risk of fetal growth restriction, fetal hypoxia, and adverse perinatal outcomes, often necessitating close monitoring and potential delivery.

Usage note: AEDF is more severe than decreased flow but less severe than reversed flow.
