effacement

Thinning and shortening of the cervix during labor, measured as a percentage.

Full Definition

Effacement refers to the progressive thinning and shortening of the cervix during late pregnancy and labor. This process occurs as the cervical tissue is drawn up into the lower uterine segment by uterine contractions. Effacement is measured as a percentage, with 0% indicating a thick, uneffaced cervix and 100% indicating complete effacement where the cervix has become paper-thin. This parameter, along with dilation and fetal station, is used to assess labor progress and is documented during cervical examinations.

Usage

Usage note: Always express as a percentage; distinguish from dilation which is measured in centimeters.

In Context
