Estimated fetal lung maturity (EFLM) refers to the assessment of fetal pulmonary development to determine the likelihood of respiratory distress syndrome if delivery occurs. This evaluation traditionally involved amniotic fluid testing including lecithin-to-sphingomyelin ratio, phosphatidylglycerol, or lamellar body counts. Modern practice increasingly relies on gestational age thresholds and clinical factors. EFLM testing is primarily considered when delivery is planned between 32-39 weeks gestation.
