Full Definition

Intrauterine growth acceleration refers to excessive fetal growth velocity that results in estimated fetal weight or actual birth weight above the 90th percentile for gestational age. This condition is most commonly associated with maternal diabetes mellitus (gestational or pre-gestational), maternal obesity, or genetic factors. Accelerated growth increases risks of shoulder dystocia, birth trauma, cesarean delivery, and neonatal complications including hypoglycemia and respiratory distress. Close monitoring and delivery planning are essential.
