The Kleihauer-Betke test is a laboratory procedure used to quantify fetal-maternal hemorrhage by detecting and counting fetal cells in maternal blood. This acid elution test exploits the resistance of fetal hemoglobin to acid treatment, allowing visualization of fetal red blood cells under microscopy. The test is primarily used to determine the appropriate dose of Rh immune globulin (RhoGAM) in Rh-negative women after potentially sensitizing events such as delivery, abortion, or trauma. Results are reported as the percentage of fetal cells or estimated volume of fetal blood in maternal circulation.
