Full Definition

Oligoamnios sequence, formerly known as Potter sequence, refers to the spectrum of fetal abnormalities that result from severe oligohydramnios, regardless of the underlying cause. The condition is characterized by distinctive facial features (Potter facies), growth restriction, pulmonary hypoplasia, and limb deformities due to compression from decreased amniotic fluid. The most serious complication is pulmonary hypoplasia, which can be life-threatening. Causes include renal abnormalities, premature rupture of membranes, and placental insufficiency.

Usage note: Modern terminology prefers 'oligoamnios sequence' over 'Potter sequence' to reflect the pathophysiology.
