dilation and curettage
Pronunciation: dy-LAY-shun and kyur-eh-TAHZH
Surgical procedure involving cervical dilation and endometrial scraping, often performed after pregnancy loss.
Full Definition
Dilation and curettage (D&C) is a gynecologic procedure involving mechanical or pharmacologic cervical dilation followed by scraping or suction of the uterine lining. In obstetric contexts, D&C is commonly performed for incomplete abortion, missed abortion, or retained products of conception. The procedure may be diagnostic (to obtain tissue samples) or therapeutic (to remove abnormal tissue or stop bleeding). Alternative methods include manual vacuum aspiration and expectant management. Complications are rare but may include uterine perforation, cervical injury, or intrauterine adhesions. Proper informed consent and post-procedure monitoring are essential components of care.
Usage
Usage note: Commonly abbreviated as D&C. Distinguish from D&E (dilation and evacuation).
