Intrauterine growth restriction

Also written as: IUGR — Intrauterine Growth Restriction

Fetal growth below the 10th percentile for gestational age due to pathologic factors.

Full Definition

A condition affecting 3-7% of pregnancies where fetal growth is impaired due to placental insufficiency, maternal factors, or fetal abnormalities, resulting in estimated fetal weight below the 10th percentile for gestational age. IUGR is associated with increased perinatal morbidity and mortality, requiring enhanced fetal surveillance and potential early delivery. Distinguished from constitutionally small fetuses by presence of pathologic growth restriction.

Usage

Usage note: IUGR implies pathologic growth restriction; SGA may be constitutional.
