oligohydramnios
Pronunciation: oh-li-go-hahy-DRAM-nee-os
Abnormally low levels of amniotic fluid during pregnancy.
Full Definition
Oligohydramnios is a condition characterized by decreased amniotic fluid volume, typically defined as an amniotic fluid index (AFI) less than 5 cm or a single deepest pocket less than 2 cm. This condition can occur at any gestational age but is more concerning in the third trimester. Causes include fetal kidney abnormalities, growth restriction, post-term pregnancy, or placental insufficiency. Oligohydramnios increases risks of cord compression, fetal growth restriction, and pulmonary hypoplasia. The condition requires close monitoring and may influence delivery timing and method.
Usage
Usage note: Distinguish from polyhydramnios (too much fluid) and anhydramnios (complete absence of fluid).
