precipitous labor

Abnormally rapid labor and delivery occurring in less than three hours from onset to birth.

Full Definition

Precipitous labor is characterized by unusually fast progression through the stages of labor, with total duration from onset of regular contractions to delivery occurring in less than three hours. This rapid progression can occur in any parity but is more common in multiparous women. While often uncomplicated, precipitous labor increases the risk of cervical lacerations, postpartum hemorrhage, and neonatal complications from rapid delivery. The condition may result in unattended delivery or delivery in inappropriate settings. Documentation should include accurate timing of labor onset and progression stages.

Usage

Usage note: Time threshold definition may vary slightly between sources; verify institutional standards.
