symphysis-fundal height
Pronunciation: SIM-fi-sis FUN-dal
Clinical measurement from the pubic symphysis to the uterine fundus used to assess fetal growth.
Full Definition
Symphysis-fundal height (SFH) is a standard obstetric measurement taken from the superior edge of the maternal pubic symphysis to the highest point of the uterine fundus using a flexible measuring tape. This simple, non-invasive assessment provides an estimate of fetal growth and amniotic fluid volume. Between 20-36 weeks gestation, the measurement in centimeters typically correlates with gestational age in weeks. Significant deviations (>3 cm difference) may indicate fetal growth restriction, macrosomia, oligohydramnios, or polyhydramnios, warranting further evaluation with ultrasound. The measurement technique requires standardization including maternal bladder emptying and consistent positioning.
Usage
Usage note: Often abbreviated as SFH. More precise term than simple 'fundal height'.
