vertex presentation

Pronunciation: VER-teks

Normal fetal presentation where the head is positioned downward with the occiput as the leading part.

Full Definition

Vertex presentation is the most common and favorable fetal presentation, occurring in approximately 95% of term deliveries. In this position, the fetal head is fully flexed with the occiput (back of the head) serving as the presenting part that enters the pelvis first. This presentation allows for the smallest fetal diameter to traverse the birth canal, facilitating normal vaginal delivery. Vertex presentation is subdivided into positions based on the relationship of the occiput to maternal pelvic landmarks, such as occiput anterior (OA) or occiput posterior (OP). Recognition of vertex presentation is crucial for predicting delivery outcomes and planning obstetric management.

Usage

Usage note: Distinguish from other cephalic presentations like face or brow presentation.
