Lentigo Maligna

Pronunciation: len-TY-goh muh-LIG-nuh

A slow-growing form of melanoma in situ arising on chronically sun-damaged skin, typically presenting as an irregularly pigmented macule on the face of elderly patients.

Full Definition

Lentigo maligna (LM) is characterised by a radial growth phase confined to the epidermis, often persisting for years before potential progression to invasive lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM). It is most frequently seen on the cheeks, nose, and ears of fair-skinned older individuals with significant cumulative UV exposure. Editorial caution is required to distinguish 'lentigo maligna' (in situ) from 'lentigo maligna melanoma' (invasive); these are related but distinct diagnoses. The term 'lentigo' should not be confused with 'lentigo simplex' or 'solar lentigo', which are benign.

Usage

Usage note: Never contract to 'LM' without prior expansion. Do not confuse with 'lentigo maligna melanoma', which denotes invasive disease.
