Milia

Pronunciation: MIL-ee-ah

Small, keratin-filled epidermal cysts that appear as firm, white or yellowish papules, most commonly on the face.

Full Definition

Milia (singular: milium) are benign, superficial epidermal inclusion cysts arising from retained keratin within follicular infundibula or eccrine sweat ducts. They are classified as primary (spontaneous) or secondary (following trauma, blistering disease, or topical corticosteroid use). Clinically they appear as 1–2 mm pearly white papules and are often found periocularly in neonates and adults alike. Editors must note the correct singular form 'milium' and ensure it is not confused with the clinical term 'milia-like cysts' seen on dermoscopy.

Usage

Usage note: Use 'milia' as the standard plural; 'miliums' is non-standard and should be corrected. The singular 'milium' is rarely used outside pathology reporting.

In Context

  • "Secondary milia developed along the blistered margins within six weeks of the burn injury." — Wound care case report
  • "The pathology report described multiple milia in the periorbital region, consistent with long-term topical steroid application." — Pathology report
