Bipolar I Disorder

A mood disorder characterized by at least one manic episode, which may be preceded or followed by hypomanic or major depressive episodes.

Full Definition

Bipolar I Disorder is a serious mental health condition defined by the occurrence of at least one manic episode lasting at least one week or requiring hospitalization. Manic episodes involve elevated, expansive, or irritable mood accompanied by symptoms such as decreased need for sleep, grandiosity, rapid speech, racing thoughts, distractibility, and increased goal-directed activity. Many individuals with Bipolar I Disorder also experience major depressive episodes, though these are not required for diagnosis. The condition typically emerges in late adolescence or early adulthood and requires long-term management with mood stabilizers and psychotherapy.

Usage

Usage note: Capitalize as a specific diagnostic term; use Roman numeral I to distinguish from Bipolar II.
